A few distinctions help
Working definitions for this site. Authors use these terms in different ways.
- Consciousness
- Subjective experience: there is something it is like to be the system.
- Sentience
- Here, the capacity for experiences that feel good or bad. Some authors use the term more broadly.
- Welfare
- How well or badly things go for a being, for its own sake.
- Moral status
- Having interests that deserve consideration in decisions about treatment.
- Agency
- A capacity to act toward goals. Goal-directed behavior alone does not settle whether there is experience or welfare.
Three questions, different arguments
01 / Precaution
Could possible experience already matter?
If there is a credible possibility of suffering, some inquiry or precaution may be warranted before certainty. The challenge is to justify the evidence threshold and the particular response without turning every imaginable possibility into an obligation.
02 / The basis of consciousness
Does the physical substrate matter?
Anil Seth argues that the processes sustaining living organisms may help constitute consciousness. This challenges the idea that reproducing computation would be enough. Biological dependence remains unproved. His 2026 response accepts that rejecting computational sufficiency does not logically rule out conscious machine intelligence, while remaining strongly skeptical of standard digital systems.
03 / A working philosophical proposal
Could self-directed concern matter on its own?
Our exploratory idea of Operational Sentience asks about systems that represent states as better or worse for themselves and organize behavior around those states. We leave open whether those states are felt.
Two questions follow: could this pattern be evidence relevant to precaution, and could it have moral significance even without experience? The second claim needs a separate ethical argument. A serious objection is that the pattern may be ordinary optimization, without interests of the system’s own.
This is an exploratory proposal, not an established category or a finding about any current system.
